Aligning your daily tasks and self-care – one day at a time
It can be overwhelming to focus on the big picture, on how things will be in a few days, weeks or years from now. While it is necessary to plan ahead to a certain extent, dwelling too much on the ifs and the buts that may or may not lie ahead is more daunting than helpful. Hence, facing hardships one day at a time can help reduce our anxiety and make us more productive and effective in the here and now.
Presented with any problem or ‘to-do’ we should always aim to break it down into smaller, more manageable tasks. Then, looking at these ’mini-tasks’, we can start with the most approachable today. If you find yourself stuck, that most often means that the mini-task should be broken down further into even smaller bits. It can be tempting to attempt figuring out everything all at once, but we should try and resist that urge. By focussing on only one day at a time, we aim to identify what can be done today to bring us closer to the desired outcome while avoiding the overwhelm. One day at a time is a soothing mantra that helps us approach each day striving for balance instead of getting it all done.
Taking care of our own mental and emotional well-being can quickly drop to the bottom of our priority list as carers when it comes to the day-to-day. This principle of ‘one day at a time’ also allows us to be mindful of self-care; more specifically, not ’skipping’ or continually postponing self-care practices, because of problems or to-dos. Skipping self-care can become an unfortunate slippery slope, because it will soon affect our overall well-being, which in turn may affect the daily care we are able to provide for our loved one. When taking things one day at a time, you treat each day as one, complete whole, where care and self-care all have their designated place and time.
One thing is for sure; the sun will rise again tomorrow, and you will be faced with new challenges or find yourself revisiting old ones. So allow time today to take care of yourself, relax and unwind. Because if not today, when?
